Why Constant and Never-Ending Improvement is the Difference Between Staying Sharp and Falling Behind
There’s an old story about two lumberjacks competing in a wood-cutting contest. One worked nonstop, determined not to waste a single moment. The other took breaks every hour. By the end of the day, the second lumberjack had cut far more wood.
“How did you beat me when you stopped so often?” the first asked.
“I wasn’t resting,” the other replied. “I was sharpening my saw.”
It’s a simple parable, but the truth runs deep: tools dull with use. And the sharpest tool we own is our mind.
Stephen Covey popularized this idea decades ago—but in today’s world, where technology, careers, and opportunities change almost overnight, “sharpening the saw” is no longer optional. It’s essential. And it keeps us young.
So let me ask you: What have you done this year to deliberately sharpen your saw?
- Did you take a course of study?
- Did you master a new skill?
- Did you pick up a new tool and learn to use it well?
- Did you replace a habit with a helpful one?
If your mind draws a blank, you’re not alone. Most of us get busy with the urgent and never get around to the important. But here’s the truth: if you’re not actively sharpening your saw, you’re quietly falling behind.
That’s one of the reasons I created the Best Life AI Lab. It’s designed as a modern sharpening stone—a place to practice Constant and Never-Ending Improvement (CANI), especially in learning how to use AI not just as a tool, but as a Personal Navigator for your best life.
This isn’t about tech for tech’s sake. It’s about staying sharp, relevant, and equipped—so you can move forward with clarity and confidence.AI Only Shines if You Train it!
The question isn’t whether you’ll sharpen your saw. The question is when.
