A Declaration of War

My life is going better today than it ever has. I love my work, my life and my family (though not necessarily in that order). My financial position improves every day. So what does all this have to do with the title of this article? Well, I’ve decided to declare war on mediocrity.

Anything less than excellent is the enemy.

I’m doing this in all aspects of my life—my business, my family, my writing, my health, my social life and my environment.

I have found the enemy lurking in many places. I find it too easy to say something is good enough. No more. I now have become a fierce warrior for excellence.

You might say this is a tad bit dramatic and you’re right. But it’s a way to get and maintain my attention—hopefully yours too. If we get brutally honest with ourselves, if we look hard at what we do and how we do it, we will find areas which we have allowed second-rate behavior and shoddy results.

Ask yourself this question: Where have I accepted less than excellent performance? If you look closely you will find them. Pick three places—three areas you are not proud to admit and then attack them. Just as any good commander would do, you don’t want to attack on all fronts at once. You must focus your forces on specific targets. As you do, you will find the enemy to be quite cowardly. It will slink away against your fierce resolve and consistent assault.

Seeking excellence does not mean becoming a perfectionist. A perfectionist accomplishes little because their efforts are never good enough to bring into the light of day. A perfectionist uses their dedication to perfection as an excuse for poor accomplishment. I’m not advocating that. I AM suggesting that you commit to constant and never-ending improvement to the service you provide, the products you make and the quality of your life.

Excellence is it’s own reward. Going after the best that’s within us is a key ingredient to building a strong, loyal and enthusiastic team (or should I say army?).

My experience is that you get what you’re willing to accept—nothing more. As you up-level your tolerance for mediocrity, you’ll find your life taking on a different dimension. Your enthusiasm, your zest and your confidence will grow. It will become contagious.

Will you join me in the crusade? Make your declaration of war today! It’s a war you cannot lose. It has no down side because there can be no casualties except the enemy’s and the spoils are sweet indeed.
