What’s the Single Most Important ‘Key’ to Success?

It’s not an easy question to answer. There are hundreds–perhaps thousands–of ideas, beliefs, strategies and concepts that are important aspects of living a successful life. And at SuccessNet.org, our business is to share them on a regular basis with our subscribers.

But if I had to pick just one, it would be to invest the time and effort to become and remain clear on what is truly important to you–what really matters most–to YOU.

When you’re clear on your core values, decisions become easier to make. You don’t waste time on things that are off-purpose. You feel better about what you’re doing and what you’ve done.

One of the biggest challenges facing most people today is not HOW to accomplish their objective but rather WHAT do they really want to accomplish. What will be worthy of their best efforts? What will gain them–and others–the greatest joy and fulfillment?

These are the questions that allow us to stay focused on things that matter–things that will make a real difference in our lives and in our world.

Sound core values are the foundation of a truly successful life. Without clear and meaningful values, any success you achieve is short-lived or unfulfilling-—perhaps both.

So when someone asks me what the “key” to success is, I have to say it’s having clarity of purpose grounded with clear core values. If you know what your purpose is–and this is something to be discovered, not invented–and you go after your purpose with the conviction of your core values, you are guaranteed to succeed.

The “why” and the “what” is far more important than the “how”.

I believe we find what we’re looking for. Know what you want and what you stand for and you’ll find the how. The answers will come. The people will appear. The opportunities will present themselves. Things you never thought would occur, will.

I know of no more important or worthy endeavor to discover your purpose and the values that are your bedrock. Do this, stay focused, keep your belief strong and you will prevail. You will live as Henry David Thoreau advocated–“with a license of a higher order of beings.”

My advice: challenge yourself to stay focused. Don’t get bogged down in the “thick of thin things”. Have conversations that question what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. Go for goals that have meaning. Instead of saying how much can we make from this project, ask what kind of value will it create. How will we have to grow in order to achieve the goal?

Be someone who cares about things that matter, who wants to make a difference. Because in the end, it’s not what you accomplish but who you BECOME in the process of the accomplishing.

Best Life Tactic: Starve your distractions and feed your focus.
