How Much Should You Give?

We’ve all heard that we must give in order to receive. We may have heard it, but not all of us have “gotten” it.

We live in a world of cause and effect, and we cannot stand before the great wood stove of life and demand heat before we provide wood.

But how much SHOULD we give? When have we given enough? And how much is TOO much?

Have you ever been in a situation where you felt you’d given too much in proportion to what you received? Most of us have. But I think in reality, it’s impossible to give more than you receive. It only seems that way because we erroneously believe that we should receive back from the same place and in the same form in which we give.

It just doesn’t work that way.

We DO get back. In fact we get back much MORE than we give. It’s just that it often comes back to us from different places.

My wife Dawn is someone who always gives more than expected. When working with a client, I often see her doing far more than is required. She goes beyond the scope of the project and adds time and effort that is above and beyond what’s expected or contracted for. It’s not enough for her to satisfy her client; she has to delight them. And she does.

There have been times when I thought she gave too much away. But over the past few years, she’s developed an impeccable reputation and become one the best database developers and report writers in the country. No one—and I mean no one—would ever say Dawn doesn’t get the job done. Her clients love her. She’s never had a dissatisfied client. And if she ever did, she’d make sure they were totally pleased—no matter what it took.

I do my best to under-promise and over-deliver, but I must admit I cannot find a better example than my own wife. She’s my model.

Action Point
If you want more in your life, look for ways to GIVE more. Does it come back? You bet. In fact it comes back to you multiplied. When you look for ways to serve, you will surely find them.

Best Life Strategy: Give More to Get More

“Consciously or unconsciously, every one of us does render some service or other. If we cultivate the habit of doing this service deliberately, our desire for service will steadily grow stronger and we will make not only our own happiness, but that of the world at large.”
