I often hear people say things like “I just don’t know what to do next.” They often lament that they have too many choices and feel stuck in being able to move forward.
Perhaps you’ve felt the same way from time to time.
I think that a great deal of procrastination is simply not knowing the next best step to take. This lack of clarity often results in no action being taken.
If you are commandingly clear on your goals—especially when they’re based on your compelling core values, empowering purpose, meaningful mission and vital vision—you will likely avoid a great deal of this dilemma. So that’s the first thing: be crystal clear on and extremely solid in the goals you have selected.
From there, what are the planned projects that will accomplish your objectives. If your goal is small or will be accomplished quickly, it may not have projects, it may be a simple list of tasks. But a bigger, more important goal will likely have projects in support of your goal. And they in turn will have milestones and tasks.
Have you identified these projects? Have you determined in what order they will be completed. If you haven’t, it will certainly add to your sense of overwhelm and confusion as to the next best steps to take.
With your planned projects, you can ascertain what tasks need to be done in order to finalize the project(s).
So your next best step may very well be to identify or clarify what needs to be done, who will do what, when and it what order. Planning, delegating and scheduling are often neglected, overlooked or rushed through in order to achieve something. But this is often results in minimal progress—sometimes even failure and abandonment of the objective.
Everything can be made more clear. Everything can be simplified, broken down, shortened or streamlined. And I and others have found the Path to Your Best Life extremely helpful in getting clear and getting more of the right things done.
