Designing and Planning Your Best Life

Living your best life doesn’t just happen. It needs to be by choice rather than by chance.

Your best life requires design and planning. They are closely associated.

But in my mind, designing is different than planning. Designing is the vision of what you want your life to look like. As the architect of your life, you design it the way you want it to be.

In doing so you draft plans (the blueprints). The look, the materials to be used, the detail as to how things will be put together are all the responsibility of the architect. Specifications, standards, measurements, colors etc. are all part of the plan.

But once the design is done, much more planning is still required.

Now comes the work of deciding when, where and who will do what—and in what sequence. The builder takes the blueprints and carefully lays out a plan of implementation. Obstacles and challenges need to be considered. Delays must be accounted for with regard to materials and subcontractors. Priorities must be established and any ambiguities in the design must be worked out.

We would never build a house or commercial building without having a good set of blueprints and a well-thought-out plan for building it. And yet few people put that same common sense into designing, creating and living their life.

The simple fact is that building a world class life demands a solid design, clear plans and exceptional implementation. It doesn’t happen by itself.

What does your best life look like? Do you have a clear picture of it? Do you have a dynamic plan to create it? Have you refined, updated and enhanced it over the years?

I hope you have. Or that you will commit to doing so now. Because it’s never too late to make the rest of your life the best of your life.
