Living In the Gap

When people ask me what I do, I still sometimes struggle to provide an accurate, succinct and understandable description.

I have a mission statement. I have several unique selling propositions. I’m clear on my values and have a vision for my company and myself.

But what do I actually DO? What is this science of achievement in which I work?

One answer is that I work in THE GAP.

The Gap is the space between where we are and where we want to be. What happens in The Gap is fascinating. It’s filled with excitement, fear, sorrow, joy, heartache and fun. It’s called life.

If you know where you are and where you want to go, the difference between those points is The Gap. In order to arrive at your destination, you must do different things. You must understand new concepts. You must make changes. You must discover and uncover who you truly are. And if you go for it, you will.

The greater the difference between where you are and where you want to be (and the more you desire getting there), the more growth and adventure you will experience. I can think of nothing more interesting or more worthy of your best effort.

As is so often said, success isn’t a destination it’s a journey. And that journey is the Gap. It’s your crucible. It’s the place you’ll be tested—the place you will face the fire. To quote a song from Survivor used in one of the Rocky movies, “It’s you against you, it’s the paradox that drives us all.”

What I’m committed to doing is helping myself and others to discover and develop the best that’s within them—to live full out 100% no matter what in this gap called life.

And it matters not the game. We might think someone’s dream or goal is frivolous, too grand, too small, selfish or even childish. But if what they’re doing stretches them, if what they attempt causes them to dig down deep inside of themselves, it doesn’t matter—they’re living in the gap.

You might think your job or business isn’t really that important. No matter. It’s a game and it’s a game worth playing at your best.

In truth, the goal, the dream, the job is nothing more than an excuse for the game. It’s not really important whether we win or lose but what we become in the process.

What’s your gap? Who will you become as a result of crossing your gap?

Best Life Truth: The major value in life is not what you get. The major value in life is what you become.
