You, Inc.

Here’s a question for you, “Do you work for yourself?”

If you own your own business, you probably said, “yes.” If you don’t, you most likely said, “No.” But the truth is, we ALL work for ourselves. Whether your employer is General Motors, the government, or any other business, the fact is, you work for yourself.

Today, more than ever, most of us will work for several employers throughout our career. But don’t kid yourself; there’s only one person you go to work for every day—You, Inc. You are president of the most important enterprise on earth—your life.

This may be a new and different way for you to view your work and employment. I think it’s a good one. Whether you have aspirations of owning your own enterprise or not, today’s economy demands an entrepreneurial approach. You don’t get paid for your time, you get paid for the RESULTS you produce with your time.

If employers could accomplish their objectives without hiring anyone, they would do so. They don’t really want to have employees; they want what employees can do for them. It might seem a bit crass to think of ourselves as commodities, but when we sell ourselves in the workplace, that’s what we are. Our value (in the market, not as people) is determined by several factors. The more in demand our service, the better we are at producing it and the more uniquely specialized our skills, the more valuable we are in the marketplace.

Many people go to work for $20, $40 or $80 an hour. The smart person goes to work for him- or herself. And they go to work ON themselves. The successful person is constantly improving their ability, their knowledge and their attitude. In doing so, they make themselves invaluable.

Remember that the one enterprise we all have throughout our lives IS our life.

By thinking of ourselves as being the CEO, CFO and Chairman of the Board of You, Inc.—we can feel more powerful—more in charge. And in fact, we are.

I have to go now. I just called a meeting of my board of directors.
