Obstacles are Everywhere—Get Over Them!

Our son Kevin is in the Marine Corp Reserves. And on a recent visit, I noticed a training folder he had that said, “Obstacles are Everywhere—Get Over Them”.

Nice little slogan for the Marines, don’t you think? But I think it has a message for all of us.

I see way too many people spending time and energy lamenting about how hard things are. They complain about things at work, the government, the recession, customers that don’t buy and on and on. They talk with anyone who will listen about their challenges.

What this does, of course, is waste not only their time, but that of those to whom they’re complaining. More importantly, it places the focus on the problem rather than the solution. And what you focus on expands.

Surely we want to be AWARE of the obstacles. But we need to remain focused on getting over them and not invest our valuable energy on what’s in the way and how unfair it is.

I like what Dr. Phil says, “Stop complaining and start asking.”

If you’re not asking for help or advice, you’re probably complaining. If the person you’re talking to about your challenge can’t help you, you’re complaining. If you’re thinking about and giving energy to your problem, you are focusing on what you don’t want and attracting even more of it.

Feeling sorry for yourself is not only wasteful, it’s counterproductive.

I’m a big fan of the Stockdale Paradox. Admiral Stockdale is credited with this approach: Holding the firm belief that we will prevail while brutally confronting what challenges we face.

Once again, confronting the challenges is what we’re talking about here. Get over them, through them, around them or take ‘em out. But never complain about them.

We’re paid to impact the world, not be impacted by it.

Overcoming obstacles is our job. It’s what we need to do to get where we want to go. They also make us stronger and train us to deal with other obstacles that we’ll inevitably face.

Yes, obstacles ARE everywhere. So let’s get over them.

By the way, if you haven’t listened to it, the replay of The Seven Deadly Roadblocks that Stop You from Achieving the Success You Deserve and Three Ways You Can Overcome Them is now available.
